Pastoral Care

At St John’s Priory School, we believe that children flourish best when their personal, social and emotional needs are met and where there are clear and developmentally appropriate expectations for their behaviour. To this end we encourage all members of the School to consider the feelings of others and accept personal responsibility for their actions.

St John’s Priory School is an environment where pastoral care and academic progress are given equal weighting in importance. We pride ourselves on knowing the whole child and because staff know their pupils, and many of their families so well, children are fully supported in times of need and on a day to day basis.

Our aim is to promote positive relationships amongst all members of the school community and to develop a culture in which individuals are listened to and their concerns taken seriously. Our ‘open door policy’ allows any concerns to be aired and dealt with quickly and effectively. This means that staff are available to parents before and after school all week. If there are any needs or concerns, these are quickly identified and acted upon.

Our small class sizes ensure that, as our children progress through the school, they can be focused on and ensure that their concerns are addressed quickly, either through Circle Time, a Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) lesson or individually.  Our weekly circle time lessons allow children to explore emotions, ways to express themselves and strategies to cope with their feelings as well as promoting an awareness of the emotions of others and how our behaviour affects others. Our structured play sessions are specifically tailored to the needs of the group, from working with a child coping with parallel play to facilitating turn taking and initiation. We plan our, personal, social and health education through, weekly lessons, assemblies and ‘circle time’ to help our pupils acquire values and skills to enable them to develop independence and choose their path in life.

At St John’s Priory School our Core Values are: Love, Happiness, Respect, Patience, Courage, Perseverance, Peace, Honesty through our aims and values, we promote and endorse the Government’s aim for every child, whatever their background or their circumstances, to have the support they need to: • Be Healthy • Make a Positive Contribution • Stay Safe • Enjoy and Achieve • Achieve Economic Well-being.
