Prep School

Our children leave St. John’s Priory School as bright, articulate and capable children who are ready to face the next phase of their education with confidence and enthusiasm
Headmistress, Mrs Michelle Jenkin

The additional challenge and responsibility of prep school life successfully prepares our children for the transition to their chosen senior schools. Children at St John’s Priory are confident learners and we aim to encourage them to ask questions, take ownership of their learning and feel empowered to voice their opinions and ideas.

From year 3, the preparation for senior school begins in earnest. Prep school pupils receive subject specialist teaching in English, Maths and Science, Sports, Arts and French and Spanish. Specialist teachers in subject areas tailor lessons to the individual needs of the children.

All children are encouraged to become involved in extra-curricular activities. The majority of our children play at least one musical instrument and have opportunities to play these publicly at music concerts, school assemblies and open mornings. Our children actively participate in sports fixtures and we have excellent Rugby, Football, Cricket and Netball teams. Our sports teachers are passionate about their subjects and organise a wide range of match fixtures against other local schools. Our popular school choir takes part in a range of community events including singing at residential homes at Christmas time and taking part in school choir competitions. All of these opportunities build self-esteem, teamwork and the ability to provide support and encouragement to their peers and our pupils are confident and enthused to perform.

Opportunities for our year 5 and 6 children include residential visits that enhance their learning and develop character. These opportunities are critical in developing their resilience, teamwork and independence.

Pupils at St John’s Priory School successfully move on to their first choice senior schools, some of which are the most academically selective senior schools in the country. Our role is to support our pupils to ensure they are prepared for their entrance examinations and to communicate closely with families around senior school preferences; finding the ‘best fit’ school for their child. We tailor our teaching to the pupils’ individual requirements to ensure our pupils’ success.
