Prep School

Academic success

Our children leave St. John’s Priory School as bright, articulate and capable children who are ready to face the next phase of their education with confidence and enthusiasm

Our children receive a fantastic beginning to their education in our EYFS department and we aim to continue this and build upon it as they move through the prep school. Children at St John’s Priory are confident learners and we aim to encourage them to ask questions, take ownership of their learning and feel empowered to voice their opinions and ideas.

From Year 3 upwards, our children receive subject specialist teaching by teachers with many years of experience in their subject of academic, sports, arts and modern languages. Specialist teachers in subject areas enable lessons to be tailored to the individual needs of the children.

At St John’s Priory, we have recently introduced the Cornerstones Curriculum. This is a creative curriculum which places great importance on the rigorous teaching of essential skills. Each class will focus on one topic per half term and these will begin with a ‘memorable experience’. This may be a trip out or a visitor. These experiences are designed as hooks to engage the children in the half terms topic and encourage them to wonder and ask questions. All of the subjects will be linked to their class topic and we will end each half term with a performance, event or sharing of their achievements.

Our small class sizes ensures that all children who want to get involved in extra-curricular activities can do so. The majority of our children play at least one musical instrument and they are encouraged to play these publicly at music concerts, school assemblies and open mornings. All children who want to get involved in sports teams can do so and we have an excellent Rugby, Football, Cricket and Netball team. Our sports teachers are passionate about their subjects and organise a wide range of match fixtures against other local independent schools. We have a school choir, SJP singers, that again is open to all children who would like to join. They take part in a range of events throughout the year including singing at residential homes at Christmas time and taking part in school choir competitions. All of these opportunities build self-esteem, teamwork and the ability to provide support and encouragement to their peers and they are confident and enthused to perform in public.

In Years 5 and 6 children take part in residential trips to places such as Kilvrough Manor in North Wales to take part in a week of outdoor and adventure activities, Normandy in France to learn about the D-Day landings, the Bayeux Tapestry, experience a French market and visit a French goat farm. This is a great opportunity for our year 6 children to spend some time away together before moving on to their senior schools.

The majority of pupils at St John’s Priory School move on to their first choice senior independent schools, some of which are the most academically selective senior schools in the country. Our role is to support our pupils to ensure they are prepared for their entrance examinations and go into these confident in their abilities. From Year 4 to Year 6 we communicate with parents to find out their senior school preferences and find the ‘best fit’ school for their child.  We can then tailor our teaching to the requirements of the entrance examinations to ensure the children are as best prepared as possible.
