At the Priory, pupils can enjoy Dance, Gymnastics, Tap, Ballet, Judo and Musical Theatre lessons.

From Nursery age, children can take ballet, tap, musical theatre lessons, gymnastics from Reception and Judo from Year 1.

Ballet and tap lessons for Early Years normally take place within the school day. Gymnastics lessons are provided by Wade Gymnastics Club and take place on Monday after school. Judo lessons take place on Tuesday after school. Musical Theatre classes take part on a Wednesday after school.

Gymnastics has been taught at St John’s Priory by Wade Gymnastics Club for over twenty years. Gymnastics help children to develop their co-ordination, strength, flexibility and social skills.

The classes cover all ages and abilities and the children work through the badge system and ultimately work towards two schools competitions each year which are held at Wade Gymnastics club near Banbury.

At St John’s Priory School Judo is taught to children from Reception class onwards. Judo is an ideal sport for both boys and girls. Confidence and self-esteem are enhanced as the player progresses through the ranks and the very nature of the grading system ensures that the next goal is always realistic and achievable with effort.

Judo has evolved from being a martial art into one of the world’s most popular sports. Judo is much more than a sport and it is seen to be effective as an educational system in both physical and moral spheres. The aim of a judo contest is to throw your opponent onto their back or otherwise hold them down to achieve victory. One of Judo’s guiding principles is “mutual benefit and prosperity”. Judo is about diligent practice leading to the realization that one could not progress at the expense of others.

At St John’s Priory School we follow the IDTA [International Dance Teachers Association] syllabus in Ballet, Tap and Modern. The classes are divided into groups considering the ages, abilities and experience of the pupils.

The children work hard all year round to meet the high standards required to pass the IDTA graded examinations and during the Summer term many of the pupils have the opportunity to take exams in the grade they have been working towards. IDTA examiners come to the school to carry out these examinations and we have always gained excellent results with a 100% pass rate.

During the year the children studying dance take part in an annual dance show at The Mill Arts Centre in Banbury which always follows a theme, complete with costumes, props, professional lighting and sound expertise. The children really enjoy taking part in the show and they develop high self esteem and gain great confidence; many of the parents have commented that it is the highlight of the year.

Children learn the discipline that goes along side dance but also they learn to express themselves through movement and it is a fun way to exercise. Children develop improved co-ordination and control of their bodies and they learn to stand with good deportment and most importantly, to work together as a team.

Children will need uniform for the specialist tuition in dance, gymnastics and judo. The specialist teachers will advise parents about any additional uniform required when their child chooses the additional classes.  Please see below for a list of items required for ballet and tap classes.
